239. Opera in Cinema at The Long Center

August 27, 2010

If you haven’t been to the Long Center since its been renovated, you need to go. Tonight’s Opera in Cinema event is free and would make a great cheap date night.

The Long Center is a great venue, and what I like best are the views of downtown.

Here is a great video from CNN on the Long Center, and if you are going to go tonight, it would be fun to watch:

On to tonight’s event…. the only experience I have with opera was seeing Phantom of the Opera years ago, so I’m not really an aficionado. And tonight’s event is not the actual opera. As the name Opera in Cinema would suggest, tonight’s feature will be a film that chronicles the production of the Verdi classic “Aida.” The show is one of the most popular operas of all time, entertaining audiences since its premier in 1871.

Showtime: 7:30pm

Tonight’s is the only free show. Other showings that will take place this weekend include:

Saturday 2:00pm – The Hidden Fortress
Saturday 5:00pm- The Birds
Sunday 3:00pm- The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
Sunday 7:00pm- Monty Python & The Holy Grail

Parking at the Long Center: $3.00

Location:

The Long Center
701 W. Riverside Drive
Austin, Texas 78704

No disrespect intended – to opera, PotO, or yourself – but Phantom of the Opera is NOT an opera. It’s a musical, the storyline of which involves an opera singer and an opera house. But opera it is not. 🙂

You should try out an actual opera sometime. I’ve only been to four, but have enjoyed each experience very much.

“And tonight’s event is not the actual opera.”

Actually, this IS the actual opera – it’s a recorded presentation of a performance of the opera Aida, filmed at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy. It’s a fabulous production and great way to become introduced to opera! AND it’s FREE!!!
