This list is wonderful– Thank you so much for taking the time to compile such a diverse, unique group of places and things to do that represent this diverse and unique city of ours! That sounds cheesy, but I mean it!
I know you’ve just said on FB that you’re getting around to posting places at specific times of the year, and I don’t want to add any more comments from the cheap seats…
that said, I hope (not so secretly) that you’ll include our spectacular Alamo Drafthouse on the list at some point. I especially love their special events like Sing-alongs, Mr. Sinus Theater (which I think is now Master Pancake), food and film events, etc. On the rare occasion that my husband and I talk about moving, it’s one of the places we agree we’d miss the most.

Love it! Can I nominate Shuck Shack to be an Austin Thing?

What a great compilation so far!!! I’m new to the Austin area and am thrilled to have all these juicy ideas for things to do here! Thank you so much!

ARCADE UFO!!! THE best arcade in Texas and in fact one of the absolute best in the nation for the arcade Connoisseur.

Great Suggestion – that will make the list! Awesome thought, thank you!

I’m not a full fledged Austinite but have a lot of experiance with it. I know SXSW is coming upin a couple of weeks and was wondering if you were planning on running a peace on it.

    • March 3, 2010 10:50 pm

Henry – I am definately planning to do something for SWSX, I have to admit that I am not an expert but next week be ready – its coming. Any advice you have let me know!

As dramatized in the movie “Whip It!”, Austin has quite a girls’ Roller Derby league. I didn’t see it on the list, but I may have missed it… I did see Playland Skate Center where I have been to a match. It is very fun and it supports local women doing something they love.

I probably will regret this because it will just add more people to an already overcrowded place that I love, but I am obligated to let people know that Central Market North
on Lamar and 38th is THE BEST place to go at night and sit outside with or without kids and hear live music and eat good food and drink wine or beer while your kids play on a large play scape (and even walk on a bridge over a duckpond).

A few suggestions… Got to see the 360 Bridge at some point, great views out there. Hike the Barton Creek Greenbelt, go soon because the creek will be dry in June if it doesn’t rain. And for the next full moon, go to the night swim at Barton Springs, people will be howling and there will probably be live music. Follow it up with the full-moon bike ride at midnight, starting on the Lamar pedestrian bridge. These are some must-do things, for real!

Austin now has a DJ School on 5th street, Dub Academy. It is locally owned and awesome. They offer classes for kids through adults and all levels of DJing from real Vinyl to Coaching new producers. They also offer a free introductory class and host various local events. Check them out. or call 600-2144.

I grew up in Austin but it’s so wonderful to have a list of things to do now that I’m visiting as an adult! If you’re really a golfer the 9 hole pitch and putt run by the Austin Parks department across from Peter Pan mini golf is a great under appreciated Austin locale. And I’m dying to hear a real person review the Backyard at Bee Caves. I’ll keep visiting!

Are you aware of Halcyon’s on 4th and Lavaca? It is a quaint coffee shop with wonderful coffee and treats, but the coolest thing is they serve personal mini- fire pots to roast marshmallows and make s’mores!!! truly a unique experience that brings you back to childhood, and also a nice date spot!

What a great blog! I’ve lived in Austin for about 7 years now, and many of my favorites are on this list. It’ll be a great link to send to my out of town guests. 🙂
    A few suggestions:
–Uncle Billy’s (Locally brewed beer, $2 pints all day Tuesday, and a dog friendly outside patio. The queso with chopped beef is a must.)
–Red House Pizzeria (Weekdays they have happy hour from 5-7 featuring $2 Lonestar pints and 1/2 price pizzas. Try the margherita pizza!)

Love your blog, and look forward to reading more!

Where is Austin MLB on that list? When you want to go out and watch Major League Baseball with other fans in Austin, an Austin MLB meetup is the best way to do that. Baseball is America’s pastime. Austin is an American city, right?

Congrats on great article in Statesman! I know how fantastic & important unpaid media placement can be, esp for entreprenuers. Keep up great work. Admittedly, I’m in PR & want to be sure you know of a few other great Austin spots & experiences for the future. Nxt holiday season, remember Blue Genie Art Bazaar!
There’s Zed’s, a new restaurant that just opened in N Austin – rare indy American/Austin spot on the scene. Live music starts early nxt year.
Eddie V’s, an Austin original as is Chez Zee (had brunch there lately?). Roaring Fork always delivers & has the wonderful (fairly) new location on Stonelake Blvd, tucked away on Quarry Lake.
You’d love Petite Peche & Co & their Salon Dinners — max 40 ppl at Church House Studios in E. Austin. Musician/producer & his culinary wife team up for one-of-a-kind evenings with themes such as Indochine, Romantic Age & Buenos Aires (in Jan). Don’t want to overwhelm, but as you know, there’s so much!
    Take care, LO

      Hi Lisa,
Thank you very much, the article was exciting and such an honor. I just heard about Zed’s (as a rule I try out places before I blog on them to make sure they are something I want to include) but I am looking very eager to trying it out. I have never been to Eddie V’s, so I hope to include it and make it there soon as I have heard fantastic things. Thank you so much for your suggestions, I am always open to them as this whole journey is about trying new and old things in the city and getting the word out there!
      Happy New Year!
