349. Armadillo Christmas Bazaar

December 15, 2010

It’s finally here! The one and only Armadillo Christmas Bazaar starts today and will be in full force until December 24th. This longtime Austin tradition has been around since 1976, and helps Keep Austin Weird and Christmas-y at the same time.

The bazaar was originally started to give local musicians a warm, dry place to play during the Christmas season. But the live music combined with the Christmas market was hugely popular. It was only scheduled for two days that first year, but because of the overwhelming success, they extended it right up until Christmas Eve. In the following years, the attendance doubled, and today most of us can’t remember Christmas without it. This is something you must experience before you can call yourself a true Austinite.

They have live music, a full bar and tons of Christmas knickknacks and gifts. If you have people on your list that are impossible to shop for, this is the place to find that priceless, one-in-a-million, perfect gift. The things you can find at the bazaar are just as fun and funky as the city itself. It is truly unique. The only other comparable cultural icons that represent Christmas in Austin are the 37th Street Christmas Lights and the Zilker Tree.
