291. Mabel Davis District Park

October 18, 2010

This is not your average city park. It’s Austin’s first skate park, and it’s legit. This is definitely one of the best places in Austin to let your inner Tony Hawk break free. It has a bowl, stairs, rails — all the elements to make a great skate park. I always longed to be a skateboarder, but I have terrible balance, so I envy those that have the ability.

Park Trivia: What I actually find interesting about Mabel Davis park is that the land used to be a landfill for the city of Austin from 1944-1955. In 1979, after passing the necessary environmental standards it was reopened as a park. In 1999 it was closed again as contamination from the landfill was discovered, but after a remediation project, the park has been open since November 2005 and it’s better than ever.

The park also has an Olympic-size swimming pool, a playscape, covered picnic areas and a full length basketball court. I meant to blog on this earlier so unfortunately, the pool is now closed for the season.

Open Daily: 5 a.m. – 10 p.m.

Price: Free

Location:
3427 Parker Lane
Austin, Texas 78741
