173. Zilker Botanical Gardens

June 22, 2010

How did the first day of summer treat everyone? The summer card screams outside, sun, and beating the heat to me so that brings me to an Austin must stop, the Zilker Botanical Gardens.

The Zilker Botanical Gardens are a go to place to relax and recharge, it is one of the most peaceful places in the city not 5 minutes from downtown. That is one of the things l love most about Austin, how you can be downtown, cross a bridge and find yourself on hike and bike trails or on a canoe along Lade Bird Lake. In the blink of the eye you can be at one with nature.

Now the Botanical Gardens are it, pictures do not do it justice. This is a must stop for both Austinites and visitors from out of town. In 1955 the Austin Area Garden Center was established to support the Zilker Botanical Garden’s Mission to promote the education and love of gardening among all ages.

Don’t take my word, in May the New York Times wrote a fantastic article on Austin’s in general and mentions the Botanical Gardens, check it out, How do we live on the best city in America, man we are lucky. Half a million people from all over the world visit the Gardens each year.

The grounds are much bigger than I expected the first time I was there. It has that Secret Garden feel to it in some parts. The tranquil setting and the way they are able to make you feel at one with nature is just incredible. A few favorite areas for me are the Butterfly Trail and Garden, the Japanese Garden, and the Herb and Fragrance Garden.

This is a fantastic stop for photographers, also a great place to take engagement or graduation pictures.
