25. Grow your own organic food & flowers at Sunshine Community Garden

February 4, 2010

This weather reminds me that spring will be here before we know it, time to start thinking about spring cleaning, April showers, and May flowers! Sunshine Community Garden was established in 1979 and provides and urban oasis for Austinities to grow their own organic food and flowers.

Sunshine Community Garden was voted by the readers’ poll in the Austin Chronicle for ” Best Community Garden” 1998, 2004, 2006, and 2007.

The land is licensed to them at no cost through the support of Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.  Sunshine Community Garden is an all volunteer organization with no paid staff. The Garden supports education with school garden tours, donations of seeds and plants to local youth groups and school as well as providing meeting space to other non-profits.  Each year a number of plots are set aside to grow fresh produce for the Micah 6 Food Bank.
